In March 2015, Samsung electronics Africa launched a bold activation called 'What If I Can'. The brand endorsed movement aimed to empower people to help overcome local challenges through the simple action of walking.

In March 2015, Samsung electronics Africa launched a bold activation called 'What If I Can'. 
The brand endorsed movement aimed to empower people to help overcome local challenges through the simple action of walking.
Solution Overview

Samsung partnered with Pavegen to lay a 68-tile walkway in Sandton City Mall's main passage in Johannesburg. The Pavegen tiles collected kinetic motion and stored it as energy in batteries. A monthly footfall rate of over 2 million footsteps was harvested during the campaign. The batteries contributed to powering the Digital Learning Hub installed at the Sunrise Secondary School in Diepsloot.

Thumbtribe was given the challenge to extend awareness of the campaign to the country through the mobile medium with the development a step-counting application. The application enabled thousands of ordinary citizens across Africa to participate by simply walking. Samsung matched every step contribution with a further 1000 steps worth of energy supply. This application can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and is available on all Android devices.
